Chapter Seventeen

Frozen Over

Meanwhile, I’ve never fought with a spear before.

How hard could it be, though? The pointy end goes into the bad guy. Not that I’m looking for a fight. It’s more me not being naïve enough to think this is going to be a cake walk. There is sure to be more fisticuffs.

The scratch on my chest burns like mad. It’s such a shallow cut, but it feels as if I’ve got a charcoal ember perched on my bosom smoldering away. Hopefully, it’s one of those situations where a tiny superficial injury hurts inordinately much more than it ought to. Something like how people always wince, cringe, and squirm when you tell them you got a paper cut, but they don’t react much when told someone broke their arm.

Gah, this burns. I might need to stay on ‘vacation’ for a few days until it heals, so I don’t have to put a shirt on. Fabric brushing over it would be unbearable. When my end finally comes, I hope there’s a little time before oblivion so I can ask the creator of all things why immortals had to be weak to silver. And why said weakness had to be so torturous. I’m as nauseous carrying this spear as a normal person would be carrying an open diaper pail around.

It doesn’t stink, though. It’s not a smell making my stomach turn, it’s just the presence of silver messing with me. If we weren’t in literal Hell right now, I’d toss this thing and forget about it. However, it’s all I’ve got to fend off any more demons.

Licinia is amazing, but she can’t be everywhere, and I’m not about to be the helpless little girl following her mother around. As unpleasant as silver is to me, it’s the difference between being effective and being weak.

Speaking of Licinia… I glance over at her. “Are you feeling all right?”

“Yes. Why do you ask?”

“No reason. Other than you being outside.”

“You sound almost worried.” She teases a smile.

“Yeah. I am.”

Licinia fiddles with the bracelets on her left wrist. “I suspect being here is interfering with my possession. We are still linked inexorably.” She gestures at the vaporous black cord. “I believe my soul is being projected outside your body.”

“You’re not in any danger, are you?” I stop walking to look at her. “You’re not going to disappear on me?”

Her expression goes from surprise to a similar sort of look my mother used to get whenever I gave her a gift for her birthday or Mother’s Day or some such thing... that is, emotional. “You are worried about me?”

“I am.”

She lets her arm drop at her side. “Almost no one taken by a dark master would miss them.”

“You’re hardly the stereotypical example of a dark master, though.” I force a chuckle. ‘Force’ because we’re still in hell and there’s no genuine laughter here. “I would miss you greatly if anything happened to you here.”

“Funny, I never wanted to become a dark master, but I did want to be a mermaid.
