Chapter Seventeen
Frozen Over
Meanwhile, Iâve never fought with a spear before.
How hard could it be, though? The pointy end goes into the bad guy. Not that Iâm looking for a fight. Itâs more me not being naïve enough to think this is going to be a cake walk. There is sure to be more fisticuffs.
The scratch on my chest burns like mad. Itâs such a shallow cut, but it feels as if Iâve got a charcoal ember perched on my bosom smoldering away. Hopefully, itâs one of those situations where a tiny superficial injury hurts inordinately much more than it ought to. Something like how people always wince, cringe, and squirm when you tell them you got a paper cut, but they donât react much when told someone broke their arm.
Gah, this burns. I might need to stay on âvacationâ for a few days until it heals, so I donât have to put a shirt on. Fabric brushing over it would be unbearable. When my end finally comes, I hope thereâs a little time before oblivion so I can ask the creator of all things why immortals had to be weak to silver. And why said weakness had to be so torturous. Iâm as nauseous carrying this spear as a normal person would be carrying an open diaper pail around.
It doesnât stink, though. Itâs not a smell making my stomach turn, itâs just the presence of silver messing with me. If we werenât in literal Hell right now, Iâd toss this thing and forget about it. However, itâs all Iâve got to fend off any more demons.
Licinia is amazing, but she canât be everywhere, and Iâm not about to be the helpless little girl following her mother around. As unpleasant as silver is to me, itâs the difference between being effective and being weak.
Speaking of Licinia⦠I glance over at her. âAre you feeling all right?â
âYes. Why do you ask?â
âNo reason. Other than you being outside.â
âYou sound almost worried.â She teases a smile.
âYeah. I am.â
Licinia fiddles with the bracelets on her left wrist. âI suspect being here is interfering with my possession. We are still linked inexorably.â She gestures at the vaporous black cord. âI believe my soul is being projected outside your body.â
âYouâre not in any danger, are you?â I stop walking to look at her. âYouâre not going to disappear on me?â
Her expression goes from surprise to a similar sort of look my mother used to get whenever I gave her a gift for her birthday or Motherâs Day or some such thing... that is, emotional. âYou are worried about me?â
âI am.â
She lets her arm drop at her side. âAlmost no one taken by a dark master would miss them.â
âYouâre hardly the stereotypical example of a dark master, though.â I force a chuckle. âForceâ because weâre still in hell and thereâs no genuine laughter here. âI would miss you greatly if anything happened to you here.â
âFunny, I never wanted to become a dark master, but I did want to be a mermaid.
